America had settled her differences, the bloodied battles of the Civil War setting brother against brother were now fading to memory. Rising from the embers of the 100-year-old nation new desires looking for an identity searched for their future. Fulfilling the dreams of the nation, three heroes of the people driven by determination, crawled up from dockyard dirt to become giants and Champions of the World in the brutal flesh and blood world of bare-knuckle boxing. The eighth wonder of the world, a bridge spanning the East River between Manhattan and Williamsburg, New York exploded to life above the bustle of the cities. Americas good friend France would later unveil a gift of independence in those same waters. When completed, the Statue of Liberty would raise into the air over New York harbor, proclaiming Americas leadership in freedom. New materials were erecting buildings on skeletons of steel reaching to scrap the sky in cities across the country. The country was on the move, traveling by giant iron horse riding on top of those same steel beams forged into rails stretching from sea to shining sea.An international sensation, the United States of America held its 100th year anniversary of the signing of its Declaration of Independence. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was honored to throw a Worlds Fair in the city where the nation was born. A few years later in 1893, Chicago, Illinois, won the privilege of throwing the four hundredth year anniversary celebration honoring Christopher Columbuss discovery of the new world. This Chicago Worlds Fair was a magnificent creation bringing the best minds in the country together for its completion. Local and world inventions of every size and shape were on display with almost every country in the world presenting exhibits punctuating the many different textures of life around the globe. Leading these days of the industrial revolution were heroes of the people three men whose determination reached up from poverty and crawled out of the toughest dockyards to become giants in their field. Jack McAuliffe, the World Lightweight Champion, Jack Dempsey, the World Middleweight Champion, and John L. Sullivan, the World Heavyweight Champion earned their fame in the battle for dominance that was bare-knuckle boxing. Two men stared through scowls of disdain in the flesh and blood world where the winner would exit the ring head held high; the loser was left hanging a rag on a clothes line.In early days, the sport offered few rules governing the brutality of the ring. Boxers were held in tight rings created by the crowd of fanatics themselves. Then came London Prize fighting rules, but it was not until the Marquess of Queensberry rules took hold in the early 1890s that the boxing world was looked on as a sport safe enough to become legal. Jack Dempsey, Jack McAuliffe, and John L. Sullivan were the most famous men in the world whose names have lingered long after their sport evolved into what we know as boxing today. In their day they were the Three Champion Jacks of the world. Uncle Jack World Champion: Heart of the Champion Jack McAuliffe explores the life of Jack McAuliffe, his friends and their legacy as champions.
